Veterans and Family Support

Veterans, service members and their families often face unexpected challenges and the VFW Auxiliary is here to assist them in their time of need. Since its founding in 1914, the VFW Auxiliary has worked tirelessly to offer financial and moral support to those who need it most.

Americanism

“Americanism is an unfailing love of country, loyalty to its institutions and ideas; eagerness to defend it against all enemies; undivided allegiance to the flag; and a desire to secure the blessings of liberty and posterity.”

Auxiliary Outreach

While emphasis is placed on our core VFW and Auxiliary Programs, Auxiliaries also partner with other community organizations. Auxiliaries can report and be recognized for such community work through the Auxiliary Outreach Program.

“Buddy”® Poppy & VFW National Home

The VFW Auxiliary works to honor and a make a difference in the lives of veterans, service members and their families. Two ways we do this are through the VFW “Buddy”® Poppy Program and the VFW National.

Chief of Staff Extension and Revitalization

There are more than 3,600 Auxiliaries throughout the United States, Guam, Panama and the Philippines. If your community does not have an Auxiliary and you would like to start one, please email us at info@vfwauxiliary.org.

Historian and Media Relations

The Historian & Media Relations Program encompasses memory keeping and collecting the five Ws: the who-what-where-when and-why of an Auxiliary.

Hospital

VFW Auxiliary members have been working to meet the needs of hospitalized veterans in VA Medical Centers and other medical facilities since the organization’s inception in 1914. Auxiliary members volunteer more than 400,000 hours annually and one in 15 members volunteers through the Hospital Program.

Legislative

VFW Auxiliary members are instrumental in assisting the VFW pass or block legislation that impacts veterans and their families. Each year, members contact legislators to share our views regarding such legislation with them and invite them to share their positions on veterans’ issues; we hold legislators accountable for honoring America’s promises to our nation’s veterans.

Membership

The VFW Auxiliary started with a small group of women who wanted to serve veterans. Today, we have nearly 470,000 male and female members and more than 3,500 Auxiliaries representing all 50 states, the Philippines, Panama and Guam. The Department of Alabama has over 38,000.

Mentoring for Leadership

The Mentoring for Leadership Program incorporates respecting the Auxiliary’s past, embracing the present and planning for our organization’s future by pairing experienced Auxiliary leaders with members who wish to expand their knowledge of the our organization.

Scholarship

The VFW Auxiliary is proud to offer and participate in scholarship contests that promote patriotism, assist students in furthering their education and help students reach their full potential.

Youth Activities

The VFW Auxiliary works to teach our nation’s youth the skills to become responsible adults through serving our country, communities, veterans and service members. We engage youth in positive volunteer experiences and believe every young person can find a place to serve that will improve their lives, as well as the lives they touch.

Department of Alabama VFW Auxiliary

Welcome to the Department of Alabama Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States Auxiliary.
 
The Department of Alabama was instituted on June 7, 1937.
 

Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States Auxiliary set out to serve the veterans of this country and our communities in honor of the sacrifices and commitment of every man and woman who has served in uniform. The VFW Auxiliary is one of the nation’s oldest veterans’ service organizations and our members are the relatives of those who served in a location of foreign conflict. Nearly 470,000 members in more than 3,500 Auxiliaries nationwide, plus three foreign-based Auxiliaries, volunteer millions of hours and fundraise millions of dollars for charitable projects that benefit veterans, military service personnel and their families.

Through our National Programs we assist the VFW to pass or block legislation that impacts veterans and their families, provide nearly a million volunteer hours in the VA medical system, conduct patriotic programs with thousands of students and offer hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships for our nation’s youth. Click here to view our VFW Auxiliary Fact Sheet.
